I got caught in the token trap in 2016.

I lost money in the REcoin ICO fraud—one of the first major cases that exposed the crypto industry’s systemic failures. The founder, Maksim Zaslavskiy, raised $2 million from retail investors by promising a revolutionary real estate-backed cryptocurrency. There was no real estate. There was no cryptocurrency. Just a website, a white paper, and a lot of people like me who believed in crypto’s promise.

When the SEC charged him in 2017, I realized I wasn’t a victim of one bad actor. I was part of a pattern.

Why I Wrote This Book

I’ve been in crypto since 2011, buying Bitcoin before it hit $1. I’ve built on Ethereum, Solana, and Cosmos since 2016. I’ve advised 50+ token projects on technology and economics. I’ve watched this pattern repeat for over a decade:

Retail investors fund the ecosystem.
VCs extract the profits.
Regulators look the other way.

The retail investors who funded this revolution deserved better. They believed in decentralization, in breaking free from gatekeepers, in technology that could level the playing field. Instead, they became exit liquidity for the same venture capital firms that dominated Web2.

The Token Trap is the evidence that you were set up to lose. It’s built on 600+ sources, 23 interviews, SEC filings, and court records. It’s not speculation. It’s receipts.

My Story

Academics & Professional Experience

I hold a PhD in public policy economics from the University of Glasgow, where my 2004 doctoral research on central bank lending policies was used by the U.S. Department of the Treasury and the Federal Reserve to navigate the 2008 housing collapse.

I earned an MBA from Harvard Business School and an undergraduate degree in physics from the University of Richmond.

As a technologist and business executive, I’ve navigated multiple tech booms—from voice over IP to cloud computing to big data—recognizing hype cycles and infrastructure shifts before they became obvious.

In November 2025, I was featured on the cover of Finance World Magazine as “the $750 Million Exit Architect.”

Media & Speaking

I’ve been interviewed as a cryptocurrency and public policy expert on Bloomberg Asharq, and popular podcasts including Web3 with Sam Kamani and SGM with Rocco Strydom.

My writing has been featured in Forbes, Entrepreneur, and The Block. My work has won awards including INC500, INC5000, and I was twice a finalist for Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year.

Personal

I’m a married father of four, living in Parker, Texas, outside Dallas. I’m an avid motorcyclist and a novice at crafting tiki cocktails.
